When she told Frodo not to touch the water, he didn't. What do you think would have happened if he did?

Cuz' if he would stir the water the vision would get all blurry?

Yeah, but I always thought there was some kind of magical essence that allowed him to see the visions and if the magical essence were disturbed then perhaps the vision would not show? Just throwing it out there...

But it can't be that simple ... if he accidentally moved the water, he could just wait for it to calm ...

I don't know. Like I said, just throwing it out there. And curious, when did she say not to touch the water?

""Do not touch the water!" said the Lady Galadriel softly."
-- FotR, The Mirror of Galadriel, Pg 478, paragraph 4 [[if you have the same version as i do]]

maybe it sort of de-purifies the water if they touch it (I know theres no such word as de-purify but you know what I mean). *shugs* I don't know, just a suggestion.

Nice theory, Elenawen.. Perhaps the water itself is something organic. Not just water, but alive under a spell or something. Did Galadriël cast a spell in th ebook before Frodo looked into the water?

She didn't cast a spell on it, but I just looked in fotr and it says this: "With the water from the stream Galadriel filed the Basin to the brim, and breathed on it." She breathed on it? I never even noticed that before...

Thanks for that quote, Elenawen. She breathed into it.... wait! She breathed 'life' into it? Could that be it? So it became something organic that would not be disturbed? Imagine that!
edit: Now I wonder wher she got those powers from. What was her ring about? Does anyone know?

her ring is called Nenya. I think it's the ring of water or something like that. *looks it up in book* "This is Nenya, the ring of Adamant, and I am it's keeper." That answer any of your questions? What is Adamant anyway?

Adamant is the hard substance the white stone is made of I looked up the powers of the ring: Nenya's power was preservation, protection, and possibly concealment from evil (which seems a bit unusual considering the fact that Sauron and his orcs have intruded upon Lothlórien before). Nothing is said about breating life into a basin ;D, But 'Ring of water' is indeed mentioned!

Hmm .. good research Eyalan! So ... Nenya can be connected to the Mirror, somehow ... *looks at smilies happily*

My theory's not nearly as interesting as yours, but the first thing I thought of was that it would burn him. I think that steam coming from it when the vision was over in the movie gave me that idea. But I like the magic idea better!
