I'm reading the Fellowship for the 4th time now or so, and I just noticed the following for the first time. During the party scene, as the firework-Smaug flies over the party, Tolkien describes the event...
"Out flew a red-golden dragon - not life size, but terribly life-like: fire came from his jaws, his eyes glared down; there was a roar, and he whizzed three times over the heads of the crowd. They all ducked, and many fell flat on their faces. The dragon passed like an express train, turned a somersau...."
....A WHAT?! Express train?

Maybe he was using a modern descirption from his day and it kind of slipped?

Haha it's weird how he can make the most non-modern descriptions for the entire Middle-earth series, but he makes this one little flaw .. its so funny

Maybe he wanted to make a modern reference so the reader could understand the speed. But still...if it was supposed to be written by Frodo, I see your point.

Ai, Valar, are you serious? *looks it up* Ahhh! Haha, wow, I can't beleive that never registered before. It could have just been a slip, he was so into writing and going so fast he just accidentally used a simile he was used to hearing and using. That is to crazy though! XD

Hmmm, Well everyone makes mistakes. Peter Jackson Did!!! Anyway, it is rather strange how he used modern discriptions for an ovious pre-industy arae. But I think he could think of no way to discribe what he imagined, and thought that this fluke would be over looked. |

I suppose he did just use it to convey speed and noise to his readers, so they would understand there probably was nothing noisier, or faster in Middle Earth than a real dragon diving, but he had to have something to compare it to, for his readers. He was asked to write a sequel to the Hobbit, and I think you can see in his first chapter, it is very Hobbit like, - he said it rather got away from him and he ended up writing the LOTR. ( Lol, good! )
