What do you think would have happened to Aragorn if Arwen would have gone to the west, like her father would have wanted her to go?

It would have been.. different. If Tolkien wanted that to happen, then I think he'd change a whole bunch of things along with that. I think it was in the ToI that I read about Tolkien originally wanting Aragorn to wind up marrying Eowyn. I think if Arwen was sent to Valinor by Tolkien, Aragorn would have ended up with Eowyn.

I think Aragon would have been heartbroken but eventually marry Eowyn for the sake of his kingdom. He may come to love her as time passes on but his heart would still rest with Arwen.
If their love was as strong as Luthien and Beren, as I think it was, he would have a darkened mind. Sad, bitter, not being able to love as strong.

So he and Eowyn were 'supposed' to be together in the beginning? That wouldn't be such a bad idea. I guess the professor valued the Beren and Luthien mirroring-thing so much, he allowed himself to change the story in a not so very good direction. Would it not be a wonderfull storyline? With Aragorn heartbroken and Eowyn to be there with a comforting shoulder to lean on. One thing leads to another... But that's just my opinion.

Yeah, I second what you said, Nathalia. Aragorn isn't that stubborn, and if Arwen had sailed to the Undying Lands, there would be no point in waiting for her and refusing to marry another.
Eyalan: Yeah, I think that would make a wonderful tale! Tolkien just wants everything to be "perfect" with the main characters in the Lord of the Rings. If Arwen had gone to Valinor with Elrond and Aragorn stayed in Gondor with Eowyn, I think it would have sorted everything out so much nicer. 'Cept for Faramir. But he would have found someone eventually, like how Eomer anded up with Lothiriel.

That would have been interesting...Aragorn and Eowyn. I don't know, in the movie, there just seemed to be something about the two of them that didn't really mix well. Maybe it was because Aragorn didn't seem interested in anything but a frienship, and she obviously wanted more than a friendship. I believe if Arwen had left, he probably would have had a marriage to Eowyn that he wouldn't have been completely happy with. And Faramir would have ended up very lonely. Unless of course, he found somet other nice Gondorian girl.
