Luthien is an elf. There is a beautiful sory in the Silmarillon called "Beren and Luthien". It's a bit sad. The relationship of Arwen and Aragorn mirrors it in the Third Age. But Beren (also human) had to go get a Silmaril, and Aragorn had to go and be king. (very simplisticly said)
