^^ I think we need a history lesson here...if the spider is Ungoliant who would be the Dark Lord person? Now lets examine this. When did Ungoliant exist? The First Age. When did she die? The 1st age. When did Shelob come into the story? The Third Age. So which spider was around when Sauron was? Well, when did Sauron come into the story? the 3rd Age (or technically the 2nd..but we won't go into that.). So if Ungoliant was dead when Sauron exisited, this painting would have to be of the 1st age, in which time Melkor/Morgoth would have been the dark lord, not Sauron ;D. Wow...I can't believe I just typed all that... .

^ (See post above yours, Leggy) Okay let's get back on track. Mirkwood is also described as very very dense. So dense in fact, the light doesn't reach the surface. How can elves ever live happily in such a place?

Well maybe its just a Silvan elf thing...I think I remember reading the Noldor liked the wide open plains and the Sindar liked the woods...so maybe its not that sinister to them. Or maybe it wasn't dense and dreary at first and the elven king didn't feel like moving his whole kingdom to a happier forest. But...at any rate, whether we be Sindarin or no...we must penetrate this forest to its very core! We must cut through the dark veil that prohibits our vision and stimulates my wild imagination. We must rise to the occasion and brave the forest with tenacity, with courage, with the hope of kidnapping the son of Thranduil himself!...spiders and creepy trees notwithstanding!
Another thing about Mirkwood is that it has a lot of limestone formations according to the trusty Atlas of Middle-earth by Karen Fonstad. I really don't see how that's relative to capturing Legolas, but just in case yall were wondering.
Eya! As the leader of this venture...you go first, *pokes towards the woods.*
