It is quite obvious that nothing could grow or live in the mines that would make for a dinner. So where did the dwarves get their food after they closed the gates of Khazad-dum in the Second Age?

Umm they ate Mithril? I have no idea...... maybe they had some way out in the back of the mines. A small and concealed exit?

Maybe they went out and hunted on the west side.

After closing the gates they reopened one? That would have been tricky...

You got a point there. Why would they otherwise make those great halls?

I got it!!!! They traded food for mithral!!! Constant trade with the elves! Remeber they said, "We have not had dealings with the dwarves scince the dark ages." Thats when the dwarves fell!!! Oh well thats my theory.

but they would stil have to have another entracne/exit wouldnt they? which wuld make haldir and elwe right
i think i agree with rek tho ; it would be really stupid for them to go in and out. remember "theres no way out" because they obviously closed all of their entrances and exits
