Eya, you asked me to make something from it: Forbidden obviously means restricted: Perhaps it was called the Forbidden Pool because it was so near to the hideout of Faramir and his men and therefore that would lead one to assume it was always guarded heavily as to keep one from "stumbling" upon it. Is that a reasonable theory? I looove it! Is there any more where that came from? It might even be true!

Perhaps it was named such before it became a hideout? Something significant?

Yeah!!! If you took that thought a step further they used it as a hideout so no one would guess it because it was... forbidden.

But the name "Forbidden Pool" would make it rather suggestive of a hideout, wouldn't it? The Forbidden Pool was Forbidden because that is where they hid. I believe the name was had a self-contained warning in it.

Maybe it used to be a swimming pool, where they added in the liquid that colours when you pee in it. So it was used to be know as 'The forbidden-to-pee-in-Pool'. But because that was such a mouthfull and it didn't fit on the sign, they shortened it to 'The Forbidden Pool'. The bath superintendant figured everyone was aware of what it stood for.
But then the orcs took over the area for a while and no one came anywhere near the 'Forbidden to pee in Pool' for years.
When the land was retaken, Gondorian soldiers ran into the pool again. The sign 'The Forbidden Pool', obviously man-made, not orc-made, was still there. The very superstitious soldiers were not aware of the original name and figured it might have been cursed by a spell and they just kept everyone out of it.

^^But how would it be sacred? It was simply a hideout, nothing like a historic battle took place there or some defining moment in Gondorian history. It was probably undiscribably convenient for the Gondorians to find such a wonderful hideout.

I also think that the pool was a sacred place and therefore forbidden.
