I think you can give karma to those you like and take it away from those you do not.. not sure though

On other sites it says Warn instead of Karma, and I htink if you get enough warnings you get into trouble or soemthing. I dunno. :/

The karma function has been a touchy subject on the boards. Basically, if you like someone, you "exalt" them to raise their karma and if you don't like them you "smite" them which lowers the karma. If done properly, it helps to check behavior on the forum, but there have been cases where misunderstandings arose, a person wound up with really bad karma because people kept smiting him/her and they left the forum (which could take away the friendly atmosphere of the forum in question). I have never been on a forum where I have seen that happen, but I have heard stories about it whenever the karma discussion comes out.

Thanks for clearing this up, Raina! I gave Haldir a Karma point yesterday to try it out, glad I did it the positive way ;D Had no idea what I was doing though... Or perhaps I shouldn't have said that

Or perhaps I shouldn't have said that I'm glad I could help! Most boards either have it, or remove the function-but that generally happens after a lot of discussion on the subject. On some boards if they keep it, they put strict rules into place (although I do not know how the rules are enforced unless the mods and admins have a way of viewing if you are constantly smiting a person).

Well on my forum, I have something like Karma, except I call it Good Omen and Blessings. I set it up so you can exchange Good Omen to Blessings, and you get rewarded for how many blessings you have. Its really a neat function. I put it to good use on my forum.
