I just noticed something as I was watching TTT. Saruman says "the forest OF Fangorn." So perhaps he knew Treebeard's real name, which would be Fangorn? Interesting...

Yeah he would have because when Saruman wasn't corrupted, he'd go and visit Treebeard and the Ents ... and they were pretty close ... plus Saruman was a Maiar so he really would know about these trivial things...

But wasn't that a secret that wasn't really supposed to be known to many?

I do not think Saruman knew about Fangorn's secret because he was totally weak when Ents attacked him

Yeah but he can't stop the Onodrim, now can he? And "Fangorn" is "Treebeard" in Elvish, and I highly doubt that Saruman wouldn't have known that.

And you are saying that he knew about Treebeard and the Ents even though he was weak when they attacked him. May be he had forgotten about them since he was concentrated on having the ring

Saruman was a friend of Treebeards, So he most likely got Treebeard's name from Treebeard himself, Before he turned to evil ways. Or he was already into Evil ways and was tricking Treebeard.

Yeah ... well Saruman does know Elvish and it's a direct translation .. he may or may not have known about their secret, but that doesn't stop him from being able to speak and translate things into Elvish ... he may have just referred to Treebeard as "Fangorn" without realising that he just mentioned the 'secret' that he didn't even know about in the first place?

Saruman was arrogant, I believe that he knew of Treebeard and the ents, but in his growing madness most likely convinced himself that they were of no great threat to his plans and went ahead with harvesting trees from Fangorn.

I wonder what Treebeard would have done to Merry and Pippin if Gandalf never showed up!

Well obviously he would crash them like a bug since he had guessed that they are orcs before Gandalf showed up suddenly

I just noticed something as I was watching TTT. Saruman says "the forest OF Fangorn." So perhaps he knew Treebeard's real name, which would be Fangorn? Interesting... I thought naming things like this was often used in English? Like The City of London for example. It's just a bit more dramatic I guess. It's certainly not like the mayor's last name is London in that case... Treebeards real name is described in the book by Treebeard himself as very long: "But you are a hasty folk, I see," Treebeard says to them. And he declines to tell them his real name.
"For one thing," he says, "it would take a long while: my name is growing all the time, and I've lived a very long, long time; so my name is like a story. Real names tell you the story of the things they belong to in my language, in the Old Entish as you might say. It is a lovely language, but it takes a very long time to say anything in it, because we do not say anything in it, unless it is worth taking a long time to say, and to listen to."

Yes but do you recall how suspicious he was of Merry and Pippin? Perhaps it was built up bitterness against Saruman, but I highly doubt that was the only reason he doubted them. No I don't think he would have told Saruman. Saruman must have known already, if he knew at all. But my only question is, why mention Fangorn's name in front of an orc? It's not like the orc would know the significance of that name.

Well the orc wouldn't understand how significant is it, right? Your question was why did he say "Forest OF Fangorn".. it means the exact same thing as "Fangorn Forest" ... simple as that.
