Do dwarf-women have beards ... seriously? Or was Gimli just joking around...?

Right, a long standing source of interest comes from the allusion of Tolkien to female dwarves having actual beards or simply disguising themselves as such. So that is a very good question, Haldir In Dungeons & Dragons, the status of beards on dwarven women varies by setting: In Greyhawk, dwarven women grow beards but generally shave; in Forgotten Realms they grow sideburns but not beards or mustaches; and in Eberron they do not grow beards at all. But Dungeons & Dragons dwarves are not exactly Tolkienish, are they? Dís was a female Dwarf, daughter of Thráin II and sister of Thorin Oakenshield. She was the mother of Fíli and Kíli, and the only dwarf-woman ever named by Tolkien, but never discribed as with or without a beard I know of.... hmmm hopeless! Does anyone have more information on this?

Good luck Haldir! Lots of interesting info there Eya, but yeah we need to know about Tolkien Dwarves. SO... I'll just look them up!
EDIT: Where exactly did Tolkien mention Dwarf-women in the books?

Dis was the mother of two of the dwarves (Fili and Kili) that accompanied Bilbo in "The Hobbit".

Hmm...another interesting question. Dwarf-women...beards...very possible. After all, the dwarves were truly a...unique...race.

Haha, always great to stick in slightly altered LotR lines whenever possible, eh Eyalan? Well put Mil. They are that! That's what makes them rock. I never really thought of the possibility that Gimli was just joking till now, but he could very well have been. I think he wasn't though, just because.

Well Gimli was probably exaggerating ... just to cheer Eowyn up ... Maybe they ressembled Dwarf-men, but they couldn't have been that hard to tell apart.

Would not be good if Gimli found a Dwarf-woman for himself. I felt really bad for him at the end

Awww you're right Boromir! It would have been awesome if he did find himself a dwarf woman, since so little dwarf men did.
I wonder how dwarves kept their population in stand. Did dwarf women who did met someone got loads of children?
Tolkien mentioned Dis, the mother of Kili and Fili. Did they have more brothers or sisters that we know of?
