How did the Balrog get into Moria? Was he sent there? Why would he hide in such a deep dark place when you have (obviously) nothing to fear?

Yes, I know, but I was wondering if perhaps he might have gone from Morgoth to Moria, and if they were close by, that would be most logical.

yes i think that the balrog didn't know about moria until the dwarves found morgoth.... but then how would everyone else know about it and have a name for it? I wonder why the balrog left Morgoth?

Morgoth is not a place. It's a character, also known as Melkor. I know he lived in his fortress Angband (Hells of Iron) that was located in the land Dor Daedeloth. All of this was destroyed in the War of Wrath, in the First Age. (Because of some shiny Silmaril matter you still had to read about ) It was stated in The Silmarillion that all the Balrogs were destroyed in the War of Wrath save some few that fled and hid themselves in the bowels of the earth. However, it was later discovered that one had escaped and hidden in Moria...

If I may expand I thionk taht the war of wrath did loadsa damage to the mountains of middle earth so maybe it got in but was sealed after the war. When the dwarves dug deep enough they let it go but all the info above in the quote is correct. well done lol

Thank you very much ;D
Your theory on the sealed inside Balrog also makes sense. After all, the goblins could have been sent to Moria for one reason: Free the Balrog. That would also explain why the Balrog didn't attack the goblins.

Why would they all run away if they were good friends with the balrog?

Because he has bad breath.... Any way they might have freed the balrog but still they might not be best friends. Thats how evil people do things lol.
